I saved this, opened it in Photoshop, and sharpened it. I think it looks great. I don't know what images from your Digital Rebel looked like or what kind of processing you're used to doing. But this one shaped right up with a reasonable amount of Unsharp Mask. The way I set up my equipment, images right out of the camera should always look soft when viewed at 100%. Film always looks soft under the loupe, too. Digital photography has taught us some bad habits and unreasonable expectations - namely, that our images should look sharp at 100%. They shouldn't. If they do, they'll look really nasty in print or when we resize them.

The only thing about this one that concerned me was that you shot it at ISO 400. There is some noise and that might be part of why you thought it looked soft. There's nothing unreasonable, though. I think it looks great. You just need to learn to look at your files a little differently.

Basically I did the following:

a) used a technique called "digital Fillflash" as I think the house if to dark:

It also includes removing some noise (ISO 400 in the shadows is noisy, no surprise here).

b) sharpened it with our EasyS Sharpening Toolkit.

Please understand me right, if you like the photo as is that is fine and the artistic expression of LIZ. I have no problem with that at all. I just made a suggestion how I feel about this image.
