Carl,
I'm sure this will look great 20 X 30 hanging on a wall. I wouldn't assume this will be the highlight in your show in January because there are "How many shooting days before then?" Your work is getting better all the time so who knows what you will capture between now and January.
The HDR comment was indeed a compliment. High Dynamic Range, or combining layers shot at different exposure levels (as the crusty old experts have been doing for ages) certainly gives added life to many photographs. I thought your photo had some characteristics of HDR because the urchin seemed to be equally exposed on both the "light" side and the "shadow" side. I guess this effect has more to do with it's shape and relatively low light.
Whatever the reason, an awesome photo.

OH, ok.. gotcha, thanks for the info ol' crusty one. ;P
Well I guess that would be a compliment then, since the only thing I processed was some sharpening in this shot. I guess I just prefer to take these types shots in the early morning and late evening, I find the tonal range in the light to be quite pleasing, with minimal photoshop needed (not that I am against adjusting layers or exposure ranges whatsoever in PS at all, it just makes for less work after the fact).

Carl-
HDR is a feature in Photoshop CS2. It combines multiple exposures into one image with extended dynamic range. Because the tool in Photoshop is new, it's become something of a medium unto itself. Of course, crusty old photographers like myself have been doing it forever, without any fancy Photoshop tools other than layers

Bill,
Firstly, thank you so much.
And secondly, you are spot on, this was captured early in the morning (early bird gets the... urchin I guess). Custom white balance from a white card I saw necessary here (again you are right on).
Also, I did some study on the 18-70 lens im using and F20 was still rated as excellent up to print sizes up to 13x19. I needed the most DOF for the urchin so I maximized my f-stop, again you missed nothing .
I admit however, I don't know what HDR stands for. Sorry for my ignorance... Always something new to learn!
Hopefully you wont have to wait long, ill be out this weekend and with some luck maybe another decent capture (crossing fingers).
On another note, no cropping was done to this photograph and I see no reason I cannot print this up to 20x30 without losing much detail. Im doing a show in January at my house and I plan on having this as my largest featured photo of the Tidepool Project. Hopefully others will like them as much as the support I am getting here.
Thank you for responding Bill, glad you keep in touch!

Carl,
Congrats on featured photo.
Excellent photo. The shadow? cast by the urchin would suggest this was captured with the sun low in the sky. There is no hint of red in the urchin so the white balance is right on. No diffraction artifact at f20. This photo almost looks HDR.
Excellent work.
I'm waiting for more.
