Gerard attacks some steep stuff at Snowbasin, near Ogden, Utah. With a little setup and coordination, good action sports photos are possible with point-and-shoot cameras like the Canon PowerShot SD950 IS I used to take this one. I set the ISO to 200 for improved depth-of-field, pre-focused where I expected Gerard to pass, did a test shot and adjusted the exposure compensation, and then had him ski it. I used the optical viewfinder and panned. It's much easier to get an accurate panning photo with an optical viewfinder. In fact, I've found it's almost impossible using just a camera's LCD. one of the reasons I bought the SD950 IS is the optical viewfinder.
