You've heard of the "Sunny 16" rule for ISO/f16? The moon can be shot with the same principle, but I have found f11 to be a better aperture for the moon. What is the moon but an object lit by full sunlight.
Camera tend to overexpose by trying to make the moon white, which of course it's not.
A large telephoto lens helps as does a large megapixel since you can crop to make the moon bigger.My blog - Photography Rulez
