Your shot looks better than Nikon's on their website! Maybe you should offer them this one (for a small fee of course).
Everything I've read about this camera says it's got the latest, greatest, innovations, and it's smaller and lighter than the F5. But is it just me, or does the vertical grip look like an add-on or an afterthought?

Having the vertical grip as an accessory is a good idea, in my opinion. If I remember right, part of the design goal with this camera was smaller and lighter. Being able to use the camera without the grip makes it more versatile and packable.
