This was properly one of the most difficult photos I had to take. I doubt that it would have been possible for me to have taken it without the combination of Canon’s “AI Servo AF” , multi point focus and the fast focussing DO lens. This combination worked magically for me on such a fast moving object.

The most difficult aspect of taking this photo is getting the bird in focus. They travel by so fast and unpredictively. To capture it I need to have the camera set on multipoint and servo focus to have any chance and generally you only have one. The Lens I used was the Canon 70-300 DO. This lens focuses very quickly and is light and small enough to point in the desired direction with relative ease. It does have a draw back, that is, at 300mm the aperture needs to be set at f/8 or greater to get good resolution. If you are using 200mm on a 1.6 size CCD you are already getting a zoom of 320mm equivalent which would be more than I am using. This photo was cropped to quite some extend to get a reasonable size image.
