Looks soft, flat, and a little dark. Can we help? Maybe your focus technique can be improved. The tonal qualities can easily be fixed in post-processing, although a lighter exposure would have helped here, too. Did you use an in-camera black and white mode or do a simple black and white conversion with some software? Most black and white conversions are pretty poor compared to the tonal qualities of black and white film. But there are some very good methods for making great black and white from color digital images.
Hope I'm not bumming you out or scaring you off. What I see is a nice photo with some easily addressed technical problems. And I'd like to help, if you're interested and willing :-)

I used an in camera mode to make the picture black and white. This is my first attempt with anything other than a point and click auto focus camera. I'm still playing with manual focus!
Despite the inperfections in the photo I still loved it! I also dont have a program for playing with photos afterwards yet as I am a poor student and am still reeling from the cost of the camera!
