The first thing I thought of when I saw this... Bart hair !
These were very tiny.I would say the size of a thumb tack.
jkriminger.The "frost" is actual texture,color present.It's that sparkle type nectar / sap ? Fragrance to attract insects?

I shot this without a macro lense. How ?
I use the large image size setting {3872 x 2592}-> Crop and resize=close up
The DSLR cropping 1.5 factor makes them look bigger.Remember the actual focal plane is increased to approx. 75mm. Using the manual flash mode permits night shots without the blownout highlights.
The flash setting;Manual mode 1/8 power. The Auto TTL flash will overexpose at extreme close up.This was shot at the min. focus distance of approx 15" with the 50mm 1.8D.
