Love this one Chantel, because we never, ever think of Meerkats as anywhere other then the desert. I was not aware they even came into the human population. But then what do I know about it?

Ha! Shows you how much I know of my own country's wildlife - I was under the impression meerkats, also known as mongooses, were found in the wetter areas of the country. But I think you are right - they are more desert animals. I've really only seen them in the Northern rural areas of the country - they definately don't come near cities or towns. If you sit still with tidbits for them, they'll come right up to you but I won't feed them as I'm sure a bite from those sharp little teeth of them can be quite nasty and who known what germs they may have! Otherwise they are very cute little animals, especially when they stand upright on their hind feet, eyeing the world around them!

Now see how this site is a valuable teaching tool. I now know that meerkats and weasels are members of the same family.

I saw a meerkat yesterday on a local wildlife television show eating a rather large lizard. That did nothing for my appetite.
