I wish the ball wasn't cropped. But that's the way it goes with sports sometimes. It's a great photo, nonetheless. The chaos of the players make it. Great colors and exposure, too.

I saw you posted a review for your camera. Thanks for that. I hope you'll post a review for that lens, too. We definitely need more reviews for the big, fast lenses!

Cheers for your comments John, I almost deleted it direct from the camera at the stadium because it was already badly cropped! I've had the Nikon 300mm F2.8 for a while now but not long enough to write a review because I still use the 70-200mm F2.8 for a lot of my work. I think the 300mm is a fantastic piece of kit though, if you can get it good condition 2nd-hand. Otherwise for day-time events a 2x convertor works just as well...what do you think?

I've got a 300mm f/4, a 70-200 f/2.8 and a 1.4x teleconverter. I can cover a lot of ground with that stuff. But there's nothing like a 300mm f/2.8 lens. I'm not sure about AF with the 70-200 f/2.8 and a teleconverter, either. My Canon 300mm f/4L is a hair slow with the tele-extender. But when I get it right, it's really nice. The 70-200 f/2.8L with the 1.4x tele-extender is rock solid, though. And the effective zoom range of the 70-200 f/2.8L with the extender on a digital SLR body is awesome!

John, I've tried the 70-200 f/2.8L with the 1.4 MkII TC and your suspicions about the AF are correct in my experience. My keeper rate suffered noticeably.

My dream soccer kit would be two 1DMkIII bodies with a 70-200 f/2.8L and a 400 f/2.8L IS. No single body/lens can cover the whole pitch perfectly, so I think you just have to go with your strength and let the chips fall where they may. A 70-200 f/2.8 or either a 300 f/2.8 or 400 f/2.8 and maybe the Sig 120-300 are the best choices for shooting soccer IMHO.
