Thank you for your interest, David . . . . can only guess at the reason. Even these quite old buildings have had central-heating installed some time ago and the chimneys are probably kept because the authenticity of the building is "protected" for historical reasons plus the fact that they might have a few " kakelugn ". These are very old and VERY attractive room heaters which are built onto/into the wall and covered with decorated tiles. Although they only have a small space inside for solid fuel they give off a terrific heat and, these days, are usually only lit for the enjoyment of guests

More than half the wooden buildings out in the countryside - and quite a number in towns - are painted this particular red colour. It's known as
" Faluröd " . . . . . . . VERY SWEDISH !
