Some technical advice...
I'm not sure what camera you're using. But check to see if it has exposure compensation. When you're taking a picture with lots of snow, you should overexpose by at least one stop. That means set your camera's exposure compensation to +1. Your camera's light meter wants to make everything a medium gray. With snow you need to trick it a little to get a correct exposure. The same goes for a primarily black scene - only with black you;d do the opposite. You'd want to underexpose by setting your exposure compensation to -1 or more.
