This spider had his lunch all wrapped up in just a few seconds. I guess he was planning dinner later because after he finished wrapping up a hapless Ladybug, he immediately went back to "minding" the net, waiting for the next visitor. Shot at about 300 mm.

Great shot! Poor lady bug. Did you use a flash? The subject appears to be lit up very well. Do you know what kind of spider it is?

I shot a spider recently with a macro lens at about 10 inches.

I like your 300mm approach better! How far away were you?

Also, please post a review of this lens. I'm curious how it handles close up & wide open as well as at 500mm. (Is it too heavy, camera shake, etc.)

I really like your other posts as well.

Thank you Joey,

This was shot in the early afternoon on a clear sunny day. No flash. The spider is a Banded Argiope. It's a cousin to the "Garden Spider" you have posted on your site. There were at least a dozen in a small patch of Goldenrod in a conservation area behind our house.

I was roughly 4 to 5 feet away. Another approach to doing macro is attach extension tubes to a telephoto lens. In this way you can get a lot closer.

As to how the Sigma is close-up, I mostly shoot at 500mm and often wide open at 5.6. I always use a tripod (Manfrotto 055PRO) and alternate between tripod heads; the Manfrotto 029 and the Slik AF2100. If I'm shooting from a boat (not infrequent) it's hand held. With the Manfrotto 029 I can pan and operate the zoom. This would require three hands with the Slik.

I don't use the Sigma much at shorter focal lengths. It is sometimes useful to catch insects that are too close to focus at a full 500mm, but if I want to go wide, I usually carry a wide angle lens. In this case the tripod is handy for "holding" the telephoto while I remove the camera and attach the wider lens.
