Meet Garland a well known Bluegrass musician in my area. During a performance last weekend I was taking pictures just off stage when he turned to look at his banjo player. He glanced at me just as I snapped his picture.

Captain of the Ship

This is really nice. With that white suit he looks like a rumpled southern gentleman - someone from a Faulkner book or Tenessee Williams play. I don't think it really matters that he's a musician. It's a striking portrait, even not knowing who he is. I also like your black and white treatment. It's got a Plus-X tonal quality and Plus-X (or the Ilford equivalent) has always been my favorite black and white film. It's got a snap to it that no other black and white film has.

Thanks guys. I think his face has a lot of character. I agree it has a Plus X look. I always shot Tri X for the speed and got to like the contrast and grain in my images, but when I wanted a nice smooth image with a lot of tonal value I switched to Plus X.

Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

excellent portrait and even more so when i read that you shot it without a set up....it looks and feels like a studio shot w. lights and a backdrop. i like the contrasting band of black in the backround that gradiates up to a white tone and then on to grey. very nice photo and i hope that he got a copy of it for his own use.
