I really love this photo, Carl. I'm noticing that you use a tripod often - have you ever considered using a monopod. I am still considering whether to get this camera - I'm not sure I want to carry a tripod on long walks in the woods - but a monopod would be less bulky and heavy. What do you think...?

I have a monopod and a tripod. But I find that unless the extra weight saved is really going to make that much of a difference the tripod is the way to go. That's just personal choice in my opinion. I tend to think if I can extract just a bit more sharpness (because of how stable the platform is) out of my pictures then overall I can be satisfied with the outcome. Nothing worse than getting a great composition and having it ruined by a minor blur. A monopod works great when there is ample light, but I find that most of my shooting is in darker light requiring longer shutter speeds (often 1/40th of a second and longer), and with a tripod im not limited on what fstop to use or shutter speed. The tripod I use most of the time is a Manfrotto 724B digi, no heavyweight by any means. As light as you can get while still getting a full extension tripod. I hardly notice the weight at all. One trick is to wrap bike bar tape or thin foam tape around the top portion of the legs to insulate you from the cold days (metal gets very cold) and soften the weight distribution on your shoulders when carrying it (i carry mine over the shoulder one arm or full nelson style). To me a tripod is invaluable, and I took some advice a while back (always shoot with a tripod when you can!) and I follow it every shoot. I think if you make a good purchase on a tripod you will find that they are lighter than you think (dont forget to get a ball head type!!!).
