This bird has amazing colour. It was co-operative in not flying off immediately when it saw me but instead walked away at a good clip.

Very Nice! Surprising as these birds (at least during hunting season) are very hard to spot unless you flush them and then they are flying.

What focal length was this at so I can get an idea of the long end sharpness?

I spotted this bird while driving in an isolated area on a dirt road near a conservation area. There was very little dry land between the road and an adjacent marsh. I kept the car beteen us and perhaps it did not feel threatened enough to take flight.

This was taken @500 mm. The posted shot is cropped by approximately 10%, so the original was filling up much of the frame. It was shrunk to 1024 X 683 and then sharpened in ps CS2 using "smartsharp", radius .6px and strength 60.
