Nice upgrades, but not enough to justify trading up on my 20D. They should have called this the 20D MKII.... I think I'll save up for a 5D or 1D MKII.

Since I'm a 10D owner, I'm thinking it's looking good. But if I were a 20D owner I don't think I'd be interested. I'm also thinking the 30D might bring down the price of used 20Ds :-)

Sort of an unintended bennifet from the release of a new model, but I don't think you should expect it to do much to the price, not for awhile anyway. After all the only current 20D owners that are gonna dump off their DSLR's for this one are gear heads anyway. I would actually be looking to see a slight spike in used 20D prices as people go looking for a cheaper alternative to the 30D or the left over 20D's still on the market. I believe the same thing happened with the 10D when the 20D first hit the market.

I agree with John. Most experts agree that the 20D price will drop, and current 20D owners will stay with an already great body. While the 10D owners will benefit and take a bigger leap to the 30D. At least that's what I've been reading.

They could have at least bumped up the resolution on this, or just held off completely. Pretty dissapointed in this one, calling it a new model. 20DS would have been more appropriate. I hear 30D I jump out of my chair going OMG check it out! only to find out it's a dissapointing offer. I think the 5D is too expensive, be interesting to see what Canon is going to do in the next year or two. I think everyone is right here. Generally just a silly offer, and makes me wonder if Canon is going a little soft (er).

I don't think it's a "silly offer." If you're currently a compact camera, 10D, or Rebel XT owner, then I think it's actually a good camera. Having seen and used the larger LCD, I think it's actually a pretty nice feature. Plus, the spot meter and more durable shutter really do move it up a level. At this point, I'm not much concerned about resolution. I'm still using and selling images taken with 4 and 6-megapixel SLRs. Eight is more than enough for most people's purposes. I do agree that this wasn't a very exciting announcement. But I wouldn't discount its value too much. I think you have to consider the market. And as a 10D owner - someone who is part of that market - I think it looks pretty good.

Good points John, I guess my argument was specifically related to the comparison between the 20d and the 30d only however (I should have been more specific). In other words, 20d owners aren't going to jump at this one, my bet is they will probably go right to the 5D, or hang tight with what they have. If you look at it from your angle, I agree.

I was looking for a better upgrade. When you shoot with a long lens or action shots. You miss too many shots because of the small number of focus points. Looks like the 30D doesn't solve that problem. Why can't I get a EOS3 (digital version) for a resonable price?

I guess the 1d Mark II N is it

Try changing your technique. Instead of using more focus points, only use the center point. That's the best way to ensure accurate, fast focus. Ask pro sports photographers what they do and 99% of them will say they only use the center point - regardless of the camera they're using.

Thats good to know John, I only use center point focus, made the most sense to me. My camera also has a flexible spot focus that starts in the center, wherein' I just use the little joystick to aim on my focus point, it works great. I know Canon's use something similar where you can choose where you want the priority to be from say 9 pre existing spots.

BTW, im tangled between the D-200 and the 30D for my next choice in a camera system. I think the full frame 5D would be too much $ for me (and probably too much Camera at this stage in my development), but now (having really thought about the 30D and read up on it.. silly me) i've revamped my opinion of it completely. There are many reasons to buy this camera including the price tag (i've heard roughly 1400 street, body only). Taking raw images at 8.25 megapixels is like John said, plenty of resolution even for Photographers making a living off of it. I understand it's not necessarily the amount of pixels that is so important but type of pixels. Canon's are different than competitors that way is my understanding. I've seen beautiful images taken on the 20D blown up to approximatley 25x40 just fine with great details at art shows.

I'd like to see them take some of the time, effort, and money, which the charge us, that goes into all those extra focus points and put it into better sensors, or more advanced buffers, or better yet, just leave it all off and charge us less!

BTW I have been using just the CFP since I started shooting. I have never really used the others outside of macro composition. Even in that case the 3 I have in the D60 are fine.
