Future Pentax 10-megapixel Digital SLR

Along with the 18-megapixel digital 645 that Pentax had under glass, there was also this preproduction model of a future 10-megapixel digital SLR, a new flash, and a 21mm f/3.2 pancake lens. The new digital SLR camera is supposed to be available in the fall of 2006.

No name right now. I'm bummed that I forgot to take a picture of the back of the camera. I wonder how big the LCD is? Not that it means anything. My guess is this camera is a non-working model.

My main concern is how well the 10MP sensor will perform. Greater density may result in an increase of image noise. We'll just have to wait to see how the test and reviews rate this increase from 6MP to 10MP.

As a dedicated Pentax user for 35 years, I'm hoping for the best.

There are 10 MP sensors in some smaller DSLR's already. The APS-C sensor can handle 10 megapixels just fine, there's a Nikon that has a similar sensor.

If you get into the range of 22 or 34 megapixels, you need a medium format back with a large sensor. But 10 metapixels is enough to do anything needed for a commercial photographer. In fact, six megapixels is plenty for commercial work. The rest is just pixelitis, the unfettered desire for more pixels whether you need them or not.

Considering the great results I am getting from my 6MP DS I do wonder if this will be enough camera to get me to upgrade, it really should entice me. I really want it to be good enough for me to have to upgrade.

6MP from my *ist DS works very well for me for full frame enlargements up to 13"X19" (Canon i9900, which is superb), but there are times I have had to grab a shot or lose it. That often requires cropping and significant enlarging, which is the main reason 10MP will be a valuable feature for me.

I'll wait for reviews about image quality before buying, however.

Also, the image stabilization feature will be most welcome.
