Is this real ? Is this a zoom shot ...from how far ? It almost looks P.S.
I'm curious.I grew up In Montana,near,around these animals, They can smell you from 200 yards, No way you could get this close ??? Do tell.
I like the photo, gives a great sense of wide open spaces, and of course, seeing the elk is an added plus. the tilt is easy enough to fix, the animal is slightly out of focus though. still, it's an attractive shot. I'm interested also in the parameters, how close you were, etc.
yes it is a little out of focus and that really hurts it as a nature shot. i was in my car driving to fern canyon and this fellow was on the side of the road so i was only probably twenty or so feet away from him and kinda drove around him a little in order not to bother him. i probably could've gotten a much better photo of him had i stopped the car and gotten out but he was big and i'm slow.....thanks for your input!

thanks alot for the comments. this is a real shot taken from my car as i was driving along the beach to fern canyon. i may have zoomed a little bit but i drove right by the elk ...within feet actually..and not wanting to excite him i drove a little further along and then stuck my sony out the window and took a few shots. i've seen these guys around here on the beach before and since it's a pretty popular hiking and camping spot the elk are alot more comfortable around people and don't tend to shy away as much. i could have had a much better photo had i gotten out of the car but i'm old and slow and he was big and young....i chose to allow him his space! thanks again for responding...i love your photography by the way.

Very cool. I've never seen an elk in California. I know about the tule elk in the SJ Valley, but I've never seen one. I didn't know there were any on the coast. It makes me feel good to know they're there. I've only seen them in Montana, Alberta, and Idaho.
Why don't you fix the horizon line? It's easy enough to rotate the photo in Photoshop or another program that allows you to rotate and crop.
I like the sky in this photo. Fix the horizon and do a little optimization to lighten up the foreground and you'll have quite a photo. I didn't even notice the focus problem.

i will fix the horizon line whenever i'm able to afford photoshop.....i spent my wad on a sony cybershot and an imac and can't wait to get a good photo soft ware program.

There might be some good free ones. Post a question on the digital cameras or the digital image forum. Maybe someone can make a suggestion. The camera didn't come with software that will rotate and crop? Those are pretty basic functions.
