I love his look but I think the bg let's this down. But, it's a candid capture so these sorts of shots are not planned.
You could have straightened the frame with the furniture.
This is what I would have done, but then I am no expert. I have had no training at all.
Also, a lower f/stop like f2.8 may have helped the focus on the face. But, then I don't know what lens you have. A kit lens won't go down that far.
Thans for your notes. This is compact camera and I can apply some converter lens additionally. By the croping factor reason my F2.8 is F9 on SLR camera.A picture is worth a thousand words .....
