Background? It actually wasn't preplanned at all. I got to the model's house, he had a military uniform and asked me if I wanted to try something with it, and I said sure. Simple as that. I had no idea what we were going to do until I got there.
The only part of it that was preplanned was that I knew I wanted him in some kind of costume. He's an amazing actor who possesses the uncanny ability to completely disappear into whatever character he happens to be portraying and I wanted to capture that gift.
Btw: this image was part of a test for a real shoot and - of course - I somehow couldn't manage to capture that exact expression when we were shooting for real. Take home: get it right the first time, because, often, there is no second time.
Now see Seth...those are the kind of background details I like. This just looks so real, like it could be my dad in WWII. A photo for a 1944 Life mag shoot.
