To many foreigners, Philippine cockfighting is shockingly brutal -- far more bloody than cockfights in other countries, where the birds battle with sharpened natural leg spurs or ice pick-like steel gaffs attached to their legs. Filipino roosters fight only one or two matches because of injuries or death. Despite this twist, the Filipino national betting pastime is becoming internationalized.

Thanks for the background Legally..would love to see a picture of them when they are not in fighting mode. They don't look much like the standard roosters we are used to seeing. Beautiful birds...I can't say much for the fighting tho.

I think these pictures should be taken off the site. This is a picture of an illegal practice in civilized countries and should be treated accordingly. What if you guys at PR don't approve every picture manually?, what a shame.

Gerald - thanks for the comment. I completely understand your feelings. I had some misgivings about these photos as well - especially when I saw your comment. But after thinking about the situation a bit I think it's best to leave them. Whether or not you agree with the sport, these photos also function as legitimate reportage and show us how other parts of the world are. Allowing the photos doesn't condone the activity shown. But it does educate us and open our eyes to the reality of the world. I think keeping the photos on the site and discussing them is actually more useful than deleting them.

I think you should use your judgement according to where your business is based (USA) and how the laws applies. Anyone could post child pornography pictures from part of the world where it is legal, I could find everything you said applies here too.

Unlike your example, no laws are being broken by hosting this photo on our gallery. Like I said, facing the reality of the world and sharing how you feel about it is the most powerful thing you can do. To censor this photo does no one any good. Leaving it up gives you a forum where you can share your opinion. I respect your feelings and hope you'll understand and respect my position.

John,
I perfectly understand your opinion and appreciate your explanation. Every photo has admirers and every word has listeners even if you attach a caption that reads "Wrong" or "Don't try it at home".
Forget about the law and look at as a principal. Oprah once said that in her later shows, she refrained from inviting murderers, rapists, and child molesters on her show even if they showed sympathy, remorse, and regrets because just being on her show give them a voice. She said, if she really has to to do it, she'll only invite the victims.
The problem I particularly have with this picture is that it was taken while the two birds are "actually" killing each other. just like showing me a picture of a man "actually" stabbing another to show me that murder is wrong. My logic response would be "instead of taking the picture, why didn't the photographer prevent it from happening". Again, I look at it as a principal not law, however in any case the law will not punish the photographer or hold him responsible either.
