The problem is that Hangar One is dangerously contaminated—it was constructed with asbestos, lead paint and toxic polychlorinated biphenyls—(PCB's) and hasn't housed a dirigible for 75 years. Yet some preservationists and aerospace aficionados were horrified when the Navy threatened to tear down the structure. Activists said the building, one of only two of its kind in the U.S., is an important landmark in Silicon Valley.
