Since you're posting in the photo critique gallery, I'll make some suggestions.
sharkey, have you tried a variety of lighting situations to see what brings out the highlights in the food? Do you use fill-flash to brighten the image? Look at the subject from different angles for a different point-of-view. Possibly include someone eating the food.
