A sample photo taken to test the FinePix Z1's non-telescoping Fujinon 3x optical zoom lens. This photo was taken at the widest zoom setting, 6.1mm, equivalent to 36mm on a 35mm camera. Note the obvious distortion in the corners. If you view the image at full resolution you'll also see that the corners are a bit soft and have less contrast. To be fair, for the kind of picture this camera will usually be used for, these flaws probably won't matter. But since the camera has a special lens, I thought I'd give it a real test.
