That's a cool photo - good timing! Looks like your 1/400th second shutter speed was a bit slow, though. The machine is suffering from motion blur and I think this one needs to be tack sharp to be really effective. I think you would need 1/1000th or faster for this one to be perfect. With the D90 you can easily go to ISO 400 or even 800 without worrying about image quality being degraded too much. You could also go with a larger aperture. You don't need f/10 for a photo like this. I would shoot at f/5.6 or f/8.

Thanks John. Appreciate the helpful feedback. I am brand-spanking new to photography. I just bought the d90 on a spur of the moment urge. I took this photo with the camera straight out of the box on full auto. Next time I have a chance at some sports action photography I will use your suggestions. Reading, reading, reading the manual, I am still learning how to work this photo marvel machine in the semi-manual modes. Thanks again!:blush2:

That's pretty damn good for a first-time, right-out-of-the-box photo! Keep the reading the manual, take tons of pictures and look hard at them to see what works and doesn't. And you should also try posting on both our Photo Critique and Sports Photography forums. Both of those will be great resources that will really help you learn.
