Mary Jane Colter , believed in extracting local materials in the design and construction of her works of art that surround the Grand Canyon. Standing proudly still today, the Hopi House is a testament to the designs of the incredible Mary Jane Colter. This stone building was built in 1905 of materials taken from the area surrounding the building. This rural desert climate has more than likely been beneficial in this building's durability over the years. Fashioned in the "Neo-Vernacular" design, the Hopi House has become a famous landmark in the Grand Canyon.
