I've had mixed reactions to this photo by several different people:
I've been told I shouldn't have included the branches on the left side of the photo (I had no say in where that tree was). Someone told me this photo was complete and utter crap. Also, the partially missing leg of the zebra also stands out. Just a few of the things people pointed out to me. I've had a local artist and a friend of mine ask my permission to use it as a reference for his painting(s). One person has asked to buy a print of it.
I honestly went back 3 times that day to see the zebras hoping to get something good. Considering this is at a zoo, I was rather limited on finding a good spot since trees practically lined the walkway. There is a lot going on in the photo and believe me it would have look awful in color (greens and blues and browns everywhere in not so flattering a manner!).
Thank you for the details, E-less. I'd agree that B&W is the best choice for this image. My first impression was only the zebra's stripes vs. the water rings -- right where you want the viewers' eyes, right?
