Fun shot.Since this is a "portrait" I would like this if she was in tight focus, bokeh all light on the right.This is a good example of a lowlight situation that will benifit / require manual focus,spot meter and an option... manual flash mode.Did you use a tripod?
Just my thoughts.
The D40 has the same manual flash options as the D80. Give it a try.I recommend...manual flash at 1/32-1/64 power level for a starting point. Welcome to PR.
