That thing costs more than my car did...Both it and my care are black, but I'm not sure which one I think is prettier.

Well at least nikon can get the color right, I hate those big white lenses from canon. I mean instead of one of those big L lenses I could always just wear a target around my neck. Damn that hood looks bullet proof!

Actually there is a good reason for making a large zoom lens white believe it or not. Nikon certainly doesn't worry about it (why, I don't know) but in the optics world, thermal issues can cause problems. You have a long, large lens used mostly outside--which can get warm in the sun. This thermal expansion can cause the optics to tilt slightly and screw up their optical figure. having carbon fiber helps since it's a great insulator.

It's not well known, but Nikon actually offers light gray versions of some of their pro telephotos, for because of the temperature issues.

Actually, it's a 300mm 1:2.8, and not the 400mm. You can tell by the red VR just behind the gold label on top of the lens. The 400mm is quite a bit bigger than this. Having said that, the 300mm is considered the best prime that Nikon make. It gives absolutely RAZOR sharp images.
