I broke all the rules this weekend. I shot a major event with an "entry-level" "consumer" camera, in the rain. Guess what? It worked great. I soaked the XTi, used AI Servo (continuous) auto focus, and shot high speed action. This was arguably one of my best race weekends for photos, ever. The XTi is awesome. I'm buying 4 more and selling my 1D.
