Hi Old Timer, well in days gone by it was a road for foot traffic and horse and carts but now it's mainly walkers and mountain bike riders. In the past motorbikes and 4X4's have used it causing quite a bit of damage but they are no longer allowed on it. The Yorkshire Dales National Park are carrying out extensive restoration work on the really bad sections to open it up to more users (particularly horses) as it is now part of the Pennine Bridleway which is around 250 miles long and runs up the Pennines to the Scottish border.
