I like the mud and the grimace. But I need to see more face for this to really work. I think I also need to understand the context better. I know what the race is, but what if I didn't? Know what I mean, Vern?
But let me ask you this John, Why do you need to know the context of this image? The only message I want to send here that this woman has been doing some kind of race, she is muddy, and is in pain.
I want to spark the viewers curiosity, but not answer it!
Maybe showing the eyes would be better, but in sports photog, you don't always get what you desire.

Hmmm - you have a good point about the context. We can choose to include, or we can choose to exclude. It makes a different photo. Maybe I feel this one needs context since there's not quite enough of her face to really make it work for me. I was trying to look at it through the eyes of someone who wouldn't have any idea what it was. For me, or on Mtbr, it was pretty good. But for the uninitiated I think it needs a little bit more - something...

The grimace on this woman really says a lot. I don't need to see eyes when I see hands on the hips, bent over posture, and the mouth open. Do I detect mud on her teeth?
